Format is a computer application designed to simplify the process of batch renaming files. With an intuitive interface and a handful of customization options, it allows users to rename, append, and sequence multiple files simultaneously with ease. Whether you're organizing photos, documents, or project assets, Format ensures consistency and saves time by automating tedious renaming tasks.

Managing large numbers of files can be frustrating when there’s no easy way to rename them in bulk, leading to wasted time and disorganization. Format solves this problem by providing a simple, efficient solution for batch renaming files. With its user-friendly interface and customizable options, Format streamlines file management, helping you stay organized and save valuable time.
With Format, the user flow is designed to be intuitive and efficient. Users begin by selecting the files they want to rename, then choose from three core actions: rename, append, or sequence.
Each step is customizable and previewable, ensuring users have full control over their file names before committing to changes.
Format is as easy as it looks. With the everyday user in mind, the structure needs to be clean and simple for anyone to follow and rename as many files as they need without error.
There were two initial layouts I tested for Format.
The first would consist of your files on the left and the formatting options on the right.
Then, I experimented with a two column system where users could see the before and after of their changes with the controls below that.
With both layouts in mind, I began constructing the finalized components for Format. While many of the variants of the components are not present, I designed them anyways for those scenarios where users may potentially encounter them. Inactive states and multiple hover states for some components are included.
Once the components were made, everything started to really click together.
Closer to the final design, it started to look more like a mix of both of the original layouts was going to be the appropriate solution. Controls were now on the left side while the preview was on the right, and the preview featured the before and after as well.
The final adjustments were to include buttons within the footer to approve changes, reset everything, or cancel the task completely. Additionally, the starting page to upload files would be formatted to reflect the elements of the main application for consistency. Overall, it was very interesting to think about design purely for function while still trying to give it a coherent appearance without going overboard at the cost of the user’s understanding and ability to navigate through the app.
